About This Site
A community guide to the Ocean Beach volleyball courts in San Diego — what's here, where the information comes from, and how to correct it.
This is an independent community site about the public sand volleyball courts at Ocean Beach, San Diego. It isn’t run by the City of San Diego and isn’t affiliated with them.
Quick start
- Where: on the sand north of the main restroom and lifeguard tower, toward the San Diego River mouth
- Hours: 8:00 am to dusk, daily
- Courts: 14 total — #1–#3 and #11–#14 open to walk-on play, #4–#10 by permit
- Bring: net, lines and ball. The city provides poles and nothing else
- Best time: mornings, before the onshore breeze fills in
- Parking: tight on sunny days. Abbott Street and the pier lot fill by mid-morning in summer
Where the information comes from
Getting this right matters more than making it sound good, so:
- Court rules, hours and numbering come from the City of San Diego’s sand volleyball rules sheet (revised November 2024). They’re reproduced on the courts page and stored in one place in this site’s source so there’s a single thing to update when the city revises them.
- Live conditions come from the National Weather Service and NOAA Tides & Currents. Both are US government sources, in the public domain.
- Restaurant names, locations and websites come from OpenStreetMap contributors, under the ODbL. Walking times are estimates calculated from the courts.
Anything not covered by one of those — opinions about which burger is worth the queue, mostly — is just that.

Something wrong?
Beach information rots fast — hours change, restaurants close, the city revises its rules. If something here is out of date or wrong, it’s worth more to have it corrected than to leave it looking tidy.
